I started working as a journalist in the early 1990s, writing for The Voice, Botswana’s first tabloid newspaper, based in Francistown. I was living not far away in Sua, a brand new salt mining town, soon to become the site of the biggest mining liquidation in Southern African history. The Voice covered a variety of stories, initially with a human rights emphasis, such as domestic violence, the death penalty and homophobic laws.

I then became editor of the Okavango Observer, best known for its coverage of the removal of Basarwa people from the Central Kgalagadi Game Reserve, and worked as a stringer for the news agency Africa Information Afrique, based in Zimbabwe, as well as writing regular features for Mmegi. My work has appeared in the Gazette, Marung (Air Botswana’s inflight magazine), V Magazine and Kutlwano Magazine in Botswana, African Business and African Analysis in the UK, and The Star, the Mail and Guardian, the Sunday Independent and the Sunday Times in South Africa.

I researched and co wrote ‘Communities in Crisis: Violence Against Women in Botswana’s North West’ (1999, Skillshare/WAR, Maun, Botswana), contributed to The Africa Groups Yearbook (1999 & 2000), and compiled a report on AIDS projects in Botswana for the World Health Organisation (2000, Durban, South Africa).

I also produced bi monthly features on human rights issues for Metlhaetsile Women’s Information Centre (Mochudi, Botswana), a regular consumer awareness newsletter for the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (Maun, Botswana), and features for the Southern African AIDS Information Dissemination Service (Harare, Zimbabwe).

Since returning to England I’ve freelanced for several newspapers and magazines and my work (including health, travel and history features) has appeared in the Sunday Times, the Mail, the Mail on Sunday, the Telegraph, the Sunday Express, Metro, Town and Country Magazine, City & Guilds, Prospects Magazine, Tate Etc., Cumbria Life, Herstoria Magazine H2Open Magazine, Discover Your History Magazine.

For several years I wrote education and careers features for the Independent on a range of issues, like teaching young children Shakespeare, as well as answering ‘Postgraduate Queries‘ and writing ‘Postgraduate Lives‘. I’ve recently written blogs for VisitLondon, BBC History, the Museum of London, Genes Reunited, Gransnet, The Royal Life Saving Society, and Lido London.
